The Affogato Effect
#161 my original subtitle didn't fit here, see below
The Affogato Effect: how my entire weekend spiraled “out of control” resulting in a completely normal weekend but a little less productive than I’d have hoped, all because I caved and allowed myself to appease a craving I knew would harm me.*
This isn’t named correctly, but I’m lazily* hijacking the Butterfly Effect reference for ease of explanation.
On Friday night I got a little crazy…and by crazy I meant, I felt like ice cream and was (despite full awareness) really dedicated to adding espresso to it for a little homemade affogato
Here’s what I mean. First the caffeine kept me up. I’m not like one of you “coffee at night doesn’t affect me” folks. I was wide awake, so I watched One Piece (Wano Country Saga). That didn’t help either.
The next morning, I was tired and couldn’t focus well nor get up to go to the gym. Shot. I thought maybe I had some motivation to garden, but the weather was bad and I learned I could get some mulch/fertilizer for free from my parents, so I put off home depot**** too. I managed to connect with a friend and get lunch, a solid banh mi, and then fill up my gas tank. This got me out of the house and doing something but with nothing left after that I returned home.
Today (Sunday) I am still feeling some of the effects, but I did catch up on a little bit of sleep. Luckily, I forced myself to leave the house to ensure I could focus – but that brings its own challenges – music, chatter, espresso machines all competing for attention in the background of a coffee shop. I also think these run-on sentences are partly fueled by sleep deprivation and caffeine, but it could just be a bad habit of mine, hard to say.
I probably keep coming up with these excuses because there haven’t been as many interesting topics lately, but I assure you I’m not doing it on purpose. But the only way through the trough is through it – and so we persist.
To look towards our bright horizon together, I see a few interesting idea sparkers coming: multiple concerts, including a “The Fall of Troy”-led festival, a trip to Mexico City, a startup I’m working with, and a couple books I’m reading. If that isn’t enough to spark something, well that’s a problem. You can just stop reading, but I will have to live with myself. Insert laughing emoji but it’s actually me crying. I must have eaten a SMILE*****.
* Could be a good anime name!
** Didn’t someone somewhere say to write without adverbs, I’m ignoring this advice insouciantly. ***
*** I was going to use blithely but insouciantly is like blithely, but fancier and more French.
**** Apparently someone on reddit saw that their Costco is testing out a garden section. Dangerous and amazing!
*****A One Piece reference that I won’t explain for fear of it being perceived as a spoiler. Also these asterisks as endnotes are getting out of hand******
******It would be cool if these functioned like roman numerals and there was a different star to represent 5 stars, like this ^*, for example, since there is no proper endnote function built in here1
Ok I was wrong, there is, but I refuse to delete one of the best parts of this week’s edition to update the formatting. Also, you can’t footnote anything in a footnote here, which is deplorable.

😂
